The Retail Trade sector comprises of the establishments engaged in retailing merchandise, generally without transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise. The retailing process is the final step in the distribution of merchandise; retailers are, therefore, organized to sell merchandise in small quantities to the general public.

India's vast middle class and its almost untapped retail industry are key attractions for the global retail giants desirous of entering newer markets. Driven by changing lifestyles and fashion, strong income growth and favorable demographic patterns, Indian retail is expected to grow 25 per cent annually.

Modern retail in India could be worth US$ 175-200 billion by 2016. With the economy booming, competition in the marketplace is fierce. The retail is one of the India's fastest growing industries with a 5 per cent compounded annual growth rate, fueled by the rising incomes, increasing consumerism in urban areas and an upswing in rural consumption.
